Background

Nijhuis Industries is continuously trying to follow the latest developments in (waste-)water treatment. One of the main objectives of current time is to create value out of waste. One of the newest developments that contribute to this demand, is the usage of relatively new techniques that do not change the components in wastewater but are suitable for separation and concentration of these valuable components. This deviates from the conventional biological and oxidative treatment processes.

The combination of direct nanofiltration and ion exchange for example is believed to be suitable for the extraction of different resources to produce green fertilizers or other products that can reduce or remove the use of other chemicals.

Goal and activities

Goal of this internship is to gain more fundamental knowledge on the field of ion exchange and ion exchange as addition to the direct nanofiltration systems. With this knowledge you can contribute to the design and development of pilot- or full-scale projects for resource recovery from wastewater.

Building a standard lab set-up for ion-exchange experiments, executing nanofiltration and ion-exchange experiments and making calculation tools to estimate the feasibility of using the combination of these techniques for different project applications will be part of the internship assignment.
