At the beginning of 2018, Bluetech Research interviewed several wastewater companies, including Nijhuis Industries, about the current status of the DAF technology market. During this research interview, we emphasised on the unique features of the Nijhuis i-DAF. Based on these conclusions, they made a report which describes the current landscape for flotation technologies in both the water and wastewater markets. Climate change and increasing urbanization are leading to increasing challenges being presented by algal growths and the general degradation of traditional raw water supplies. To address these, flotation is gaining in popularity for sea water pretreatment and for the enhanced treatment of non-saline surface waters.
Flotation technology is well-established and accepted as offering a reliable, well-performing and cost-effective approach in many areas. There have been few technical innovations in recent years and the “Holy Grail” goal of being able to produce the very small bubbles essential for good performance, without utilising an energy demanding, solution-dissolution approach has still to be met. However, recent advances in nano-gas technology may soon change this.

“DAF is a mainstay of the Nijhuis processes offerings. They can provide a range of alternative DAF systems and appurtenances, tailored to specific applications. At the heart of Nijhuis’ offerings is their Intelligent Dissolved Air Flotation (i-DAF) system. This features Nijhuis’ innovative and intelligent non-clogging aeration system (i-AIRATION) which forms fine air bubbles for the separation of particles without the need for large saturator vessels.
Operation of the i-DAF
The operation of the i-DAF system is automated and by continually monitoring inflow and TSS load inputs, adjustments are automatically made to the aeration system, level control system and float scraper system to maximize operational efficiency and minimize operational costs. Nijhuis state that up to 25% in energy savings can be achieved through using this automation. Further automation can be provided through their i-DOSE system which automatically adjusts coagulation chemical and polymer dose rates using inputs from on-line monitoring of feed water quality.
Focus on reducing cost and maximizing process efficiency
Nijhuis is actively demonstrating and successfully proving new applications for DAF, particularly in the wastewater treatment, carbon capture and resource recovery fields. It is one of the few DAF system providers which provide automatic control of both the DAF and associated chemical dosing systems, with a focus on reducing costs and maximizing process efficiency. As more and more municipalities and industries focus on carbon capture and reducing overall energy requirements, we expect that the processes promoted by Nijhuis will find strong acceptance.”
