Internship: Removal of medicines and antibiotic resistant bacteria from wastewater
Micropollutant removal is a ‘hot topic’ with public awareness and concern for micropollutants increasing in the last years. While conventional methods have proven to be effective for the removal of most wastewater pollutants, a select class of pollutants such as medicines, microplastics, pesticides and hormonal molecules are not removed and still emerging. The release of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes via domestic, hospital wastewater and animal production sewage is also an increasing problem. While large amounts of antibiotic resistant bacteria are released into the environment, it is postulated but unclear if this release contributes to the worldwide progression of antibiotic resistance. Ozonation and absorption are technologies which are applied as a chemical free wastewater treatment. These technologies can be used to remove micropollutants from wastewaters as well as to disinfect and hereby remove antibiotic resistance bacteria and genes.
Goal and activities
The goal of this internship or graduation project is to develop and optimize our oxidation and absorption pilot systems for the removal of medicines and resistant bacteria from wastewater. The internship project will be carried out by performing a series of laboratory and pilot experiments to find the optimal operational conditions and process design. Furthermore, an estimation of the investment and running costs will be investigated based on the experiments for these different systems.
