Internship: Downstream sludge treatment


Wastewater treatment is necessary to clean and reuse water. However, it does not end there. As a byproduct of wastewater treatment, a large amount of sludge is produced.
Depending on the process, this sludge can be physical-chemical or biological sludge, among others. Sludge can be further treated on site to reduce the sludge volume and increase the dry matter content. This reduces sludge transport and costs. Due to this, there is a demand for low cost sludge dewatering equipment.

Goal and activities

The goal of this internship or graduation assignment is to investigate effects of sludge types and polymer use on sludge dewaterability using a dewatering system and compare our lab protocol to pilot results. A pilot has been built to be placed on site and a lab method has been developed. During this internship or graduation project you will look into optimizing the process settings of the dewatering system in combination with the sludge producing treatment step and further develop the lab method. This will encompass experimentation on site as well as lab experimentation.
